"Now the wheels of justice will turn. Slowly but surely. Each of them will have to answer for whatever it was that he did. I’m not interfering anymore (Bloor 300).”
This quote was from Mr. Fisher, who was devastated by his son’s and Arthur’s involvement in the murder case of Luis Cruz. This is the most significant quote throughout the book because Mr. Fisher has always been an encouraging, supportive father to Erik, his one and only football dream, in contrast to how he treated Paul. From their arrival in Lake Windsor Downs, he had never stopped bragging about Erik’s exceptional skill as a placekicker. However, after his dark side has been revealed, he turned his back against him and let justice come to decide his son’s fate. ...“Arthur takes care of all my light work.” Erik and the rest of them caught up with Arthur at the gate. I could see that they were laughing (Bloor 212). This quote was from Erik, right after the incident of assaulting Luis Cruz. This is also a significant quote because this reveals how evil-minded, cruel person Erik is along with Arthur, who is obedient to Erik no matter what circumstances they are in. The main focus is that they were laughing. Erik and Arthur do not think that what they have done is wrong and that, they can physically threaten people like Luis Cruz whom they are not favourable of. The blackjack used to attack him became the main source of Luis Cruz’s death from aneurysm. Erik was still in his rage. He was talking to Arthur Bauer, but he was staring at me when he roared, “Shut up, Castor!”…And I remembered Erik’s fingers prying my eyelids open while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint into them. They left me screaming and rolling around on the floor of the garage (Blood 262-264). This quote was again from Erik when Paul told them he saw them killing Luis Cruz. The significance of this quote is that Erik has always been a mentally unstable person. He simply rages irrationally when Paul elaborates the situation between them and Luis. Then, a flashback from the past is shown to refer back to Erik’s deed. Erik and Castor, torturing Paul by spraying paint into his eyes and leaving him in the garage with agony. This clearly shows that there has been a pattern all along in Erik’s behaviour, unstable and irrational (even to his younger brother) |
